The Saddest Thing You'll See for a While

Brave soul.

Transcript:

[Brenden] "I should be gone in a week or so."

The day I met Brenden Foster I met an old soul in an eleven year old's body.

[Reporter] "What are the best things about life?"
[Brenden] "Just having one."

I didn't understand how this child, a year younger than my own son, could be so courageous facing death.

[Brenden] "It happens, it's natural."

Three years earlier, doctors diagnosed Brenden with leukemia.

[Brenden] "I was scared."

The boy who once rushed through homework so he could play outside was now confined to a bed.

[Brenden] "I had a great time. And until it's time--my time has come, I'm going to keep having a good time."

Brenden's selfless dying wish: helping the homeless. But he was too ill to feed them on his own. So volunteers from Emerald City Lights passed out sandwiches in Seattle, people in Los Angeles held a food drive, school kids in Ohio collected cans, they gathered goods to feed the hungry in Pensacola, Florida, and here in Brenden's home town.

[Brenden's mother] "He's left a legacy, and he's eleven. He's done more than most people ever even dream of doing. Just by making a wish."

Brenden's wish came true and he lived to see it.

[Brenden's grandmother] "He has had the joy of seeing all of the beautiful response to his last wish. It gives him great peace. He knows that his life has meaning."

Days before dying he surprised us all with a sudden burst of energy. He wanted off oxygen and out of bed to buy a video game. Wise beyond his years, but still a kid.

[Brenden's mother] "I have been so blessed to have this child. A mother couldn't ask for a better son."

"Bee Man," as his family calls him, had another wish: to save the bees by sprinkling wild flower seeds. Packets of seeds will be passed out at his funeral.

Before dying in his mother's arms, Brenden said he's amazed that a young boy could make such a difference.

[Reporter] "What gets you sad, sweetie?"
[Brenden] "When someone gives up."

Brenden Foster never gave up.

[Reporter] "Thank you Brenden."
[Brenden] "Mhmm."

Even at the end, Brenden kept giving.

[Brenden] "Follow your dreams, don't let anything stop you."

Universal Truths

One of the most awkward things that can happen in a pub is when your pint-to-toilet cycle gets synchronised with a complete stranger.

You never know where to look when eating a banana.
At the end of every party there is always a girl crying.
Sharpening a pencil with a knife makes you feel really manly.
Prodding a fire with a stick makes you feel really manly.
You're never quite sure whether or not it's against the law to have a fire in your backyard.
Nobody ever dares make cup-a-soup in a bowl.
You always feel a bit scared when stroking horses.
The most embarrassing thing you can do in school as a child is to call your teacher mom or dad.
The smaller the monkey the more it looks like it would kill you at the first given opportunity.
Every guy has at some stage while taking a pee flushed halfway through and then raced against the flush.
It is impossible to look cool whilst picking up a Frisbee.
Driving through a tunnel makes you feel excited.
There's no panic like the panic you momentarily feel when you've got your hand or head stuck in something.

Things That Make You Go Hmmm...

Just one of many things...

Transcript:

And you don't have to be a conspiracy theorist to wonder exactly what President George W. Bush knew about the attack, and when he knew it.

According to the official White House version, it was at this moment in a Florida classroom that Bush learned the second plane had hit the World Trade Center and that the US was under attack.

But here's what George Bush himself said almost 3 months later when asked about September 11: "I was sittin' outside the... the classroom waiting to go in, and I saw the airplane hit the tower and the television was obviously on... and I used to fly myself, and I said, 'There's one terrible pilot.' And, uh, I said,'It must have been a horrible accident.' But I was whisked off and didn't have much time to think about it."

Now wait a minute, George Bush was told about the second plane while he was inside the classroom. So you just heard him describe seeing the first plane crash on television that day, but that's impossible. No one saw the first plane crash on TV on September 11 because the video tape of it didn't surface until the next day. So how could George Bush have seen what he said he saw?

First Post!

Once in a while I get the urge to write or to start a blog or do something where I can share thoughts with others. And then almost just as quickly I lose that interest after wondering who on earth would want to bother reading what I have to say. And really I don't have much drive to express myself through the written word. But I do enjoy spending some of my free time stumbling through the internet and I love sharing some of the funny, inspiring, shocking, interesting, and so on, things I find. Why not create a central place to do that? And so here we are.
